Dr. Vishwanatha N. Gokhale

Resident Ophthalmologist & Surgeon

You are in good hands with Dr. Gokhale with his excellent qualifications & experience in the vision field of many years (since 1996). Till date he has performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries, around 200 corneal transplants and more than 2,000 other surgeries.

Dr. Vishwanatha N.Gokhale joined Lions Medical Centre in Mombasa in September 2008 to start the Executive Eye Centre. Graduated from Mysore Medical College and Karnataka Medical College in India in 1996, Dr Gokhale is a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS). He secured the M C Modi Gold medal in Post Graduate Ophthalmology course. Before moving to Kenya, he worked as a consultant eye surgeon in various eye institutes in India where he was also in charge of training the students in Phaco-emulsification [using ultrasonic energy] and Small Incision Cataract Surgery [SICS].

Proficient in Injection less Phaco-emulsification cataract surgery, Dr. Gokhale also performs other anterior segment surgeries like Glaucoma surgeries, DCR, Squint and Oculoplastic surgeries. The credit of performing first Corneal transplant in Mombasa using a locally harvested corneal tissue goes to Dr Gokhale. His skill in large volume SICS surgeries has helped Lions Eye Centre perform  cataract camp surgeries in large numbers.

 

He trains Ophthalmic Clinical Officers in cataract surgery.

Dr. Gokhale is a life member of All India Ophthalmology Society, THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF MANUAL SMALL INCISION CATARACT SURGEONS (ISMSICS) and the Ophthalmological Society of Kenya.

Mr. George Binns

Ophthalmic Clinical Officer 

Mr. George Binns is a senior and highly experienced Ophthalmic Clinical Officer - instrumental in developing the Lions Eye Centre and the cataract surgical Outreach programme during the initial years. Mr. Binns has treated thousands of patients and performed a few thousand cataract surgeries in the last 30 years.

Mr. George Binns completed his Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Ophthalmology in1982. He worked as a medical officer at Kajiado District Hospital between 1982 to 1985 and at Coast Provincial General Hospital up to 1987. Later he went on to upgrade his qualifications and did his Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine -Ophthalmology / Cataract Surgery in 1988. After completing the course he worked at Kilifi District Hospital from 1988 to 1995 after which he joined the Lions Medical Centre.

Ms. Margaret Onyari 

Ophthalmic Clinical Officer

Not only is Ms. Margaret Onyari a proficient and experienced Cataract Surgeon (having removed more than 5000 cataracts in the last 16 years), she is also one of the most popular Surgeons.

Ms Margaret Onyari did her Clinical Medicine at M.T.C Nakuru to qualify as a Clinical Officer in 1978. In 1986 she qualified as an Ophthalmic Clinical Officer from Medical Training College Nairobi and joined Coast Provincial General Hospital, Mombasa. In 1997 Lions Eye Centre employed her as a full time Ophthalmic Clinical Officer. She was sponsored by the Centre to complete her Cataract surgery training in 2003. 

With her experience of over 30 years, Ms. Margaret has become an expert clinician in general ophthalmology. High volume cataract surgical work at our free eye camps is being efficiently managed by Ms. Margaret- making her one of the best cataract surgeons in the country. Being very passionate and gentle in treating her patients she has become very popular among her patients.

Dr. Sandhya Gokhale

Ophthalmic Surgeon & Medical Retina Specialist

If you are residing in Nyali, Dr. Sandhya is the one to consult (see timings). She has been in the field of Ophthalmology & Retina for many years (since 1997) and has performed more than 8,000 cataract surgeries, over 1000 other surgeries and 500 laser and intravitreal procedures.

Dr. Sandhya joined the Lions Eye Centre in June 2011 as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Medical Retina specialist.

Being proficient in Phaco-emulsification [using ultrasonic energy] and Small Incision Cataract Surgery [SICS], she plays a vital role in conducting high volume cataract surgeries in the Lions outreach programmes.

She provides services as a Medical Retina specialist handling patients with retinal problems which can be managed non surgically.

Dr. Sandhya obtained her Masters in Ophthalmology from Karnataka Medical College, India in the year 1997 after which she had a successful private practice as an ophthalmologist for over 8 years and also  worked as a consultant ophthalmologist at Laxmi Eye Institute in New Bombay in India.

She has undergone a training in Medical Retina from M M Joshi Eye Institute eye in South India. 


Dr. Sandhya Gokhale commenced the Lions Executive Eye & Laser Centre in Nyali in 2014.

Ms. Sofia Andalama

Optometrist

If you or your children need to get your eyes checked for just vision correction -professionally, you need to consult Ms. Sofia at the Centre.

Ms. Sofia Andalama qualified as an Optometrist from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in 2016. She joined Lions Eye Centre, Mombasa in November 2016 as a full time Optometrist in General Eye Clinic. She is responsible for the vision assessment and refraction for adults and children.

Mr. Elly Muga Odigo

Head of the Theater

Mr. Odigo is the main man in the operating Theatre at the Centre and in the Camps. Surgeons rely on him for assistance -which is absolutely valuable with his experience of many years in management of the Theatre.

 

Mr. Elly Muga Odigo graduated from Kenya Medical Training College as a community health nurse in 1988 and as a Theater Technician in 1993. He served at the Coast Provincial General Hospital, Mombasa from 1989 to 1995, after which he joined Lions Eye Centre as the Theater in Charge. Till date he has been serving as the head of the theater organization and assisting the surgeons who operate at the Lions Eye Centre.

Mr. Odigo has been trained on "cost reduction in high volume surgery" by Aravid Eye Hospital in India and on "Infection Control" by Southampton University, U.K. He has extensive experience in organizing and attending Lions Outreach cataract surgical camps.

Dr. Hatim Shabbirali Yusufali 

Vitreo Retinal Surgeon

Dr. Yusufali is a Resident Ophthalmologist at Lions Sight First Eye Hospital in Nairobi and has extensive experience in Retinal Surgery. He visits Mombasa once a month to handle any Vitreo Retinal surgeries required.

 

Dr. Yusufali qualified as an Ophthalmologist in 2010 at the University of Nairobi and then obtained a Fellowship in Vitreo-retinal Surgery in 2016 from Sankara Nethralaya Hospital, Chennai, India.

Dr. Yusufali was awarded the Dr. V T Doshi Gold Medal for the Best outgoing Vitreo Retinal Fellow for the year 2016- 2017.

Administration

Ms. Zaheda Ebrahimjee

Administrator

Zaheda has been managing the Lions Medical Centre since 2010, running a tight 'ship' to ensure that the various Clinics, Lions Opticians, the Pharmacy and the Outreach Programmes all  run smoothly. 

 

She handles the Staff, Purchasing of non-pharmaceutical items as well as manages the Finances, and ensures that the Centre is maintained well.

 

Zaheda was trained by Barclays Bank and served in various capacities, becoming proficient in Administration and Trade Finance in the 21 years she spent at the Bank. 

 Mrs. Nuru Saad

Outreach Manager

Nuru supervises all activities of the Outreach Programmes including coordinating relevant approvals from the County Governments for publicizing and holding the events. She also organizes funds for all the projects.

Nuru also maintains all the data and files relating to the various activities of the Centre.

She also assesses needs of patients who cannot afford the treatments and connects them with potential sponsors.

Nuru has a Diploma in Business Management and has experience of 15 years+ which includes serving for NGOs.

Mr. Robert Mwita

Marketing Manager

Robert is instrumental in publicizing the activities of the Centre so as to expand the availability of the various services offered to many more people in the Coast so that the full capacity of the Centre is utlized and the maximum number of people benefit.

Robert is also instrumental in establishing and promoting strong, long-lasting Donor/Support relationships -by partnering and collaborating with them.

Robert is a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing Option) -qualifying from the University of Nairobi and also has a Diploma in Sales & Marketing from Institute of Commercial Management (ICM) in the UK.

Robert has worked for 14 years+ in various sectors  such as Manufacturing, Banking, Freight & Logistics.

Governance

Dr. Vinesh Vaghela

Consulting Physician/Cardiologist 

Dr. Vaghela is a co convener of the Hospital Management Committee of the LIONS CLUB of MOMBASA PWANI's LIONS MEDICAL CENTRE project. As part of the Committee, he is responsible for the management of the Centre to ensure it delivers the mandate that has been set out.

 

Dr. Vaghela has been a LION since 2002 and has served as President, Region & Zone Chairman during his tenure.​ He provides valuable insights in matters relating to the various medical activities of the Centre.

Mr. Mahendra Shah

Entrepreneur

Mr. Shah is an active member of the LIONS CLUB of MOMBASA PWANI and currently part of the Committee that oversees the activities of the Centre and he is instrumental in ensuring the smooth running of the CENTRE.

 

Having many years of experience in business commercial activities, Mr. Shah provides insight into ​the best approaches to manage the Centre efficiently.
