Cataract Surgery (By Ultrasonic energy [PHACO]
or Conventional methods)
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts often develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes. Symptoms may include faded colors, blurry or double vision, halos around light, trouble with bright lights, and trouble seeing at night. Cataracts are most commonly due to aging but may also occur due to trauma or radiation exposure, be present from birth, or occur following eye surgery for other problems.
We deploy a relatively painless technique-Phacoemulsification [Phaco]-which uses ultrasonic energy, to remove the cataracts. This is the most modern method now and we use the latest equipment (Centurion from Alcon) which offers various options to patients.
Injection-less 'phaco' cataract surgery was introduced by Dr. Gokhale- wherein patient undergoes surgery under eye drops anaesthesia and walks out of the theatre without eye bandage- which in turn reduces recovery time.
We are also equipped to perform pediatric cataract surgeries.
Glaucoma Diagnosis & Management
Glaucoma is a 'silent killer' of vision and mostly it is caused by increased pressure on the optic nerve leading to its permanent damage. Unfortunately, there are no noticeable symptoms of this condition until it is too late (hence the need for an annual eye check). If not detected and managed at its early stage this can lead to irreversible and complete blindness.
However, the good news is that it is possible to detect Glaucoma at a very early stage.
We have various equipment and diagnostic tools such as Applanation Tonometry, Gonioscopy, Pachymetry, Field Analysis and Optical Coherence Tomography, as well as Lasers and a Surgical setup to provide accurate and definitive diagnosis as well as management of Glaucoma.
Comprehensive Vision Checks & Solutions
It is recommended to all to have a routine checkup of the eyes by a qualified eye specialist on a periodic basis- normally at least once in a year. This will help in early diagnosis of eye diseases and prevent possible irreversible damage leading to blindness.
We provide comprehensive eye checkup to people of all age groups and these include vision evaluation, refraction, slit lamp examination, eye pressure checkup and examination of retina.
Based on the examination, changes in the power of the lenses or any further special tests required to rule out eye diseases like Glaucoma, cataract etc. will be advised.
Treatments (with Laser) for Retina Problems caused by Diabetes etc.
Retina is the innermost nerve layer of the eye. It receives the light rays, processes them and sends them to the brain via the optic nerve which results into vision.
Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and Macular degeneration are some of the common causes which can irreparably damage the retina.
Our medical retina department is equipped to diagnose these conditions with Fundus Camera, Fluorescein Angiography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and treat them with Lasers and Intra vitreal injections.
Corrections of squint eyes and other abnormalities
Deviation of one of the eye balls (squint) is just one of the abnormalities handled under our Oculoplasty Services. Other abnormalities such as blockage of the tear duct leading to watery eyes, drooping of the lids, growth in the eyes like pterygium etc., are treated at the Lions Eye & Laser Centre.
Corneal damage which leads to blindness is a common eye problem - but now can be effectively treated by transplanting cornea from a donor.
The Center has performed around 100 successful corneal transplant surgeries.
The Eye Bank facility available at Lions Medical Centre makes it possible to harvest corneas from donors and transplant them to patients who need them.
Awareness about eye donations in the coast of Kenya is lacking, hence the number of transplant surgeries is very low. Lions Eye Centre has partnered with NGOs such as Cornea-Help, to increase the awareness of benefits of donating eyes.
